Desilting of ponds in Jaffna District carried out with the participation of local authorities

With the aim of protecting the water resources of Jaffna District and improving the water-holding capacity and usability of ponds, Desilting activities are continuously being carried out with the participation of the respective local authorities.

These activities are being carried out as a continuation of the directive issued at a recent discussion chaired by the Hon. Governor of the Northern Province, N. Vethanayahan, to promptly resolve the practical challenges encountered in the Desilting of ponds in Jaffna District and carry out these activities with the cooperation of local authorities.

Accordingly, Desilting activities at Kantharodai Pond, the freshwater storage project at the Valukki riverbed near Arali Bridge and in the Katkulam – Allaipiddy areas are being carried out with the participation and cooperation of the respective local authorities.

In particular, the Desilting activities are being undertaken with the objectives of increasing the capacity of water reservoirs in the relevant areas, rehabilitating catchment areas and creating conditions for the available water resources to be utilized more effectively.
