Milad-un-Nabi Day (Holy Prophet’s Birthday) is a sacred day that commemorates the profound meaning of the holy Qur’anic verse, ‘We have sent you only as a mercy to mankind’.
On this blessed day, which commemorates the birth of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and his noble principles of life, I extend my heartfelt Milad-un-Nabi greetings to the Muslim people of the Northern Province and to all Muslim brothers and sisters living in Sri Lanka.
The love, compassion, justice, brotherhood, equality, patience, honesty and noble quality of living for others demonstrated by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) as an example to humanity are timeless human values.
One of the important lessons from the life of the Prophet is that, instead of creating differences among people, they should be brought together with love and respect. In particular, these qualities are of even greater importance in our Northern Province, where many ethnicities, religions and communities live together.
While respecting each of our religious beliefs, we must also respect other religions and their values, and build a society founded on peace, harmony, brotherhood and mutual trust.
The Milad-un-Nabi festival should not merely be an occasion to commemorate the birth of the Prophet, but should also be an opportunity to put his teachings into practice in our daily lives. Standing by those who are suffering, helping the poor, respecting one’s neighbour, standing against injustice, and fostering peace and compassion in society are noble lessons that we must learn from the life of the Prophet.
On this sacred day, I pray that unity and understanding among all the people living in our country will be further strengthened, and that peace and prosperity will prevail. May the blessed principles of life of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) further foster love, peace and harmony in our society.
