Northern Province Hon. Governor N. Vethanayahan stated, “Sending a higher number of students to the university is not a pride for the school. Real pride for a school is how many students we have provided to society with service minds.”
The 75th Year ‘Platinum Jubilee’ of Mullaitivu, Mulliyavalai Vithiyanantha College was held yesterday and today with great pomp. As the 2nd day of this event today (06th June 2026), Northern Province Hon. Governor N. Vethanayahan made this event special and participated as the chief guest.
The ‘Vidyadeepam’ book that expresses the history of the school was launched at this historical special event, which was headed by K. Jeyaveerasingam, school principal. Moreover, gifts, certificates, and monuments were given by the Hon. Governor to honor the students who received the best results, including in education and sports, and the students who achieved in the co-curricular activities. Further, the “Viththiyin Sirappumigu Mainthan” Award (the illustrious son of destiny Award) of the school was given by Hon. Governor Veerakaththipillai Shanmugarajah, Doctor of Medicine, and Doctor V. Navaneethan.
As a participating chief guest, Hon. Governor further said as follows:
“Today, this school is highly reached to Platinum Jubilee with the dedication of many people, including principals and teachers.” I have always been emphasizing leadership. The success and failure of any school depend on its principal. If there is the best leadership, that institution will arise, and if there is wrong leadership, it definitely will fall. We face so many challenges daily due to inefficient leadership qualities. Our people will only get affected by those leaders who don’t have social responsibility and humanity in addition to the leadership qualities.
The school principal mentioned in his report that ‘We will create this school as a frontline school of the Northern Province, which creates future leaders of high personality and good qualities.’ My heartfelt wishes for his long-term vision. He has placed a matter that is needed for this time. Most of the people think studying, getting a high position, and earning are enough for them. Most of our new generation’s target is also the same. That is totally wrong. This period is changing to a new generation without knowing about service-mindedness. Therefore, school should be made to teach the students in their childhood regarding the importance of service without prioritizing them over money.
I know Doctor Shanmugarajah and Doctor Navaneethan very well, who were today honored here by this school. The principal recalled how they served with contempt for their lives in today’s environment where service sectors are becoming money-making sectors. Compliments and honors will reach people who don’t expect them. The principal said that this honor is given to create the best students, like them, for society. That is completely true. You all should grow as service-minded people. They are the who always think about the society.
Even though we have reached a higher level through studies, no one will respect us if we don’t provide service to society. Respect will not come only if we earn money. If we do the service, all will respect us. While I served as a district secretary of this district, one of the army commanders asked me, ‘Why will the students who studied in this district not come here to provide their service?’ We should induce the thought among our society that this is our district; we should provide service to our people. Only school can do this.
Today most of the people threw the empty water bottles at the road while travelling on the bus. They put garbage on the road. Today’s generation, those who did this, do not realise their fault or guilt. They have changed that much. Therefore, schools and we have the huge responsibility to teach good things and change them. If we fail to do this, a generation which thinks about society will cease to exist. Therefore, schools should pay much attention to this.’
Most of them, including teachers, old students, students of the school, and the school community, also participated in this event.
