A special meeting was held between the Swiss ambassador, who is leaving Sri Lanka, and the Honorable Governor

A special meeting was held today (Monday, 08th June 2026) between Siri Walt, Swiss ambassador to Sri Lanka, and N. Vethanayahan, honourable governor of the Northern Province, at the governor’s secretariat.

During the meeting, the Honourable Governor expressed his sincere gratitude for the various projects that the Swiss government has implemented in the Northern Province in the past.

The ambassador learned at this juncture about the global rise in fuel prices due to the war in the Middle East and the resulting impacts on the Northern Province. The governor highlighted the need to reassess the situation, noting that most of the development plans initiated by the Northern Province Council were affected by these price increases.

The meeting included a detailed discussion on the activities implemented to remove landmines in the northern province, as well as the ongoing contributions from the Swiss government. The Swiss ambassador expressed appreciation for Sri Lanka’s significant achievements in landmine removal efforts.

They also focused on the current activities within the agriculture sector, which serves as the backbone of the Northern Province. This included examining price fluctuations in market products, the challenges associated with these fluctuations, and the issues that farmers face as a result.

The Swiss Ambassador engaged in an in-depth discussion with the Honourable Governor regarding the current circumstances in the Northern Province.

Participation of Sivapathasuntharam Sathiyaseelan, the secretary to the governor of Northern Province, in this meeting is mentionable.
