In order to provide a permanent solution to the prevailing flood problem in the Suthumalai area, it has been decided to immediately undertake measures including canal rehabilitation jointly by the Provincial Irrigation Department and the Valikamam South West Pradeshiya Sabha. In addition, it has been decided to immediately desilt suitable tanks in the area to improve its water storage capacity.
This was decided during a discussion held today – on Tuesday (08 September 2026), at the Governor’s Secretariat under the chairmanship of the Hon. Governor of the Northern Province, N. Vethanayahan, regarding the flooding prevailing in the Suthumalai area and the obstructions found in the canals.
It has also been decided to take immediate action to restore waterways so that floodwater can naturally flow and drain, as well as to desilt suitable tanks in the area so that excess water accumulating during the rainy seasons can be stored and utilized.
These measures to prevent flood impact in the Suthumalai area will be commenced without delay, and necessary further measures will also be continuously undertaken in the next phase based on the prevailing conditions.
