The Food Festival and Field Day was jointly organized by the Department of Agriculture, Mullaitivu District, and the Traditional Food Center of the North. The event was held on Thursday, 07.05.2026, at the Farmers’ Training Centre in Mallavi under the leadership of Mrs. Kirubavathani Sivatheepan, Deputy Director of Agriculture, Mullaitivu District.
The Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, Northern Province Mr. S. Sivasiri, participated as the Chief Guest, while the Additional Provincial Director of Agriculture, Mr. T. Yogeswaran, attended as the Special Guest. The Chairman and Vice Chairman of the Thunukkai Pradeshiya Sabha, bank managers, the Officer-in-Charge of Mallavi Police Station, teachers, students, subject Mater officers, Agricultural Instructors, Technical Assistants, and many farmers also participated in the event.
While addressing the gathering, the Secretary of the Northern Provincial Ministry of Agriculture stated that a variety of crops had been cultivated even within a small land area and that the full land had been fully utilized for cultivation. He further underlined that if each of us effectively uses our own land for cultivation, we can achieve self-sufficiency in meeting our household food needs.
During the field day, many varieties of traditional foods prepared by Ammachi traditional food producers were displayed. Vegetable cultivation in potted bags, fruit cultivation, onion cultivation, Other Field Crops cultivation, and beekeeping methods were also showcased. In addition, a drone-based chemical spraying method was demonstrated practically. Comprehensive explanations related to crop cultivation were also provided.
