A special discussion was held regarding the value-added products of Palmyrah and Coconut development of cooperative societies.

Northern Province Hon. Governor N. Vethanayahan requested the relevant authorities to expedite the export products by immediately overcoming the disruptions caused in the bottled Palmyra juice.

The Governor made this instruction at the special discussion, which was held on Monday (11th May of 2026) at the Governor’s Secretariat regarding the value-added products of Palmyrah and Coconut development of cooperative societies.

It was pointed out by the chairman of the Palymyrah Development Board in the discussion that the export of Palymyrah Juice was not started in the current year. It is also stated in the discussion that exporters are affected due to practical issues and delays caused at the government departments. Because of this, a situation has arisen to abandon the export. At the same time, concern was expressed that many cooperative societies are unfortunately pouring large quantities of palm toddy onto the ground and destroying it, thereby wasting a valuable resource that is unique to our province.

The Hon. Governor emphasized while listening and replying to the situation that ‘The economic status of Palmyrah industries employees and cooperative societies of our province should be improved.’ Government institutions should fully cooperate without barriers to government exports. With that, he directed the resolution of the conflicts between exporters and societies.

As per the following decsions, Hon. Governor Instructed to the relevant parties to immediately start the Palymrah Export Activities still lying dormant :

Preparing and Providing a Formal Agreement between the Provincial Department of Cooperative Development and the Palymarah Development Board

The Palmayrah Development Board provides technological advice and guidance related to the quality control of Palmayrah Juice of Societies.

Most of authorities participated at the discussion including Secretary to the Governor of the Northern Province, the Chairman of the Palmyrah Development Board, the Commissioner of the Northern Province Cooperative Development Department, the Assistant Commissioner of Cooperative Development for the Jaffna District, representatives of palmyrah and coconut resource cooperative societies, exporters, and many others.
