As part of a media tour brought to the Northern Province by the Asian Development Bank to review the outcomes, benefits to the people and future developments of water supply and small and medium enterprise projects being implemented in the Northern Province with the support of the Asian Development Bank, the media delegation held discussions with the Hon. Governor of the Northern Province, N. Vethanayahan, regarding the development situation of the Province.
As part of the media tour being conducted from yesterday – on Sunday, until the 26th to visit projects being implemented in the Northern Province with the support of the Asian Development Bank, officials from the Asian Development Bank’s Sri Lanka Resident Mission and journalists from the local print media met the Hon. Governor of the Northern Province today – on Monday 24 August 2026, at the Governor’s Secretariat.
The purpose of this tour is to bring to the public the Asian Development Bank’s contribution to the water and small and medium enterprise sectors in Sri Lanka, and particularly the impact these projects have had on reducing poverty, reducing regional inequality and improving the quality of life of the people.
The media delegation’s tour has been planned to visit the seawater desalination project established in Thalaiyadi, related water initiatives being implemented in the island and small and medium enterprise centres in Jaffna, among other projects. This has also provided an opportunity to directly document the practical outcomes of the projects and the experiences of the beneficiaries.
The Governor and the media delegation exchanged views on the infrastructure facilities created in the Northern Province through the Asian Development Bank’s projects, their current status and future requirements. The discussion also focused on the continued need for investment in the Province’s water resources, drinking water security, agriculture, entrepreneurship and regional economic development.
The Secretary to the Governor of the Northern Province, a team comprising officials including the Director of the Asian Development Bank’s Sri Lanka Resident Mission, the Chief Project Officer, Senior Relations Officer, Finance Officer and Project Assistant, as well as journalists from the local print media, participated in the meeting.
