“Let us all join hands to eradicate drugs with the dedication of the President!” – Governor’s call in Jaffna

With the dedication and support of His Excellency the President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, Governor of Northern Province Hon. N. Vethanayahan called upon everyone to unite and successfully carry out the efforts to eliminate the deadly drug menace.

Under the national programme ‘The Whole Nation Together’ aimed at completely eradicating poisonous drugs, a discussion to form the Jaffna District Action Committee was held this Wednesday evening (14 January 2026) at the Jaffna District Secretariat Auditorium.

Jaffna District Secretary M. Piiratheepan, in his welcome address, presented the actions taken so far to control the use of deadly drugs in the Jaffna District along with relevant statistics.

Northern Province Governor and Co-Chairman of the Jaffna District Coordinating Committee, N. Vethanayahan, who spoke next, stated:
“Without eradicating deadly drugs, the future generation’s life will not be prosperous. Therefore, let us all unite and eliminate this menace.”

Hon. Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs Anand Vijeyapala, who addressed the gathering thereafter, requested everyone to come forward and work together to transform the Jaffna District into a model district free of drug use.

Subsequently, Hon. Minister of Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean Resources and Chairman of the District Coordinating Committee, R. Chandrasekar, emphasized that this programme to revive Jaffna is extremely important and urged everyone to join hands and actively participate in it.

An open discussion with officials and the public followed.

The event was attended by Hon. Parliamentarians of Jaffna District K. Ilankumaran, J. Rajeevan, S. Sribavanantharaja, Secretary to the Ministry of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs Ravi Seniviratne, Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police (Northern Province), Deputy Inspector General of Police, Police officers, Security forces personnel, Deputy Chief Secretary (Administration) – Northern Province, Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture – Northern Province, religious leaders, community representatives, and heads of departments.
