The special Vesak celebrations organized by the Police and the Armed Forces in the Jaffna District were officially inaugurated today – on Saturday evening _ 30 May 2026, by the Hon. Governor of the Northern Province, N. Vethanayahan.
The Governor commenced the event by ceremonially switching on the illuminated decorations of the Vesak Zone established at the Jaffna Main Police Station. He also visited and inspected the Vesak lanterns and decorations specially designed by each police station. Thereafter, the Governor officially opened the Dansala (Food donation) organized at the venue for public use.
Among those present at the event were the Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police (SDIG) for the Northern Province, the Commander of the Northern Naval Area, the Jaffna District Secretary, the Jaffna District Commander, the Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) for Jaffna District, and several other distinguished guests.
Subsequently, the Hon. Governor of the Northern Province, N. Vethanayahan, together with Hon. Sai Murali, the Consul General of the Indian Consulate in Jaffna, officially illuminated the Vesak Zone organized by the Army in the vicinity of the Jaffna Nagavihara. Following this, the Dansala organized there was also ceremonially declared open by the dignitaries.
The special event held at Nagavihara was attended by the Chief Incumbent of Nagavihara and other respected religious leaders, the Jaffna District Commander, the Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police (SDIG) for the Northern Province, the Commander of the Northern Naval Area, the Commanding Officer of the Palaly Air Force Base, the District Secretaries of Jaffna and Kilinochchi, the Director of the Jaffna Teaching Hospital, and the Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) for Jaffna District.
It is noteworthy that, during the event, prizes were awarded by the Governor and other distinguished guests to the Army units that secured the first three places for the best Vesak decoration designs in the Vesak decoration competitions.
