As per the direct instructions and guidance of the Hon. Governor of the Northern Province, N. Vethanayahan, the mobile service to update the personal profile files of teachers aged over 54 across all education zones in the Northern Province was successfully completed today – on Saturday (01 August 2026).
The Secretary to the Provibcial Ministry of Education of the Northern Province, M. Patrick Diranjan, stated that a total of 406 teachers benefited from this initiative.
During the Governor’s public meetings, numerous complaints were repeatedly received regarding delays in the payment of pension benefits to retiring teachers in the Northern Province. Many teachers reported facing considerable hardship because they were unable to receive their pension entitlements within the stipulated time.
Following a thorough inquiry by the Hon. Governor into these complaints, it was revealed that the delays were primarily caused by deficiencies in the teachers’ personal profile documentation, which were often identified only after they had applied for retirement. In addition, some teachers were unable to receive their pension benefits because the required investigations into their service records had not been completed.
In addition, the Hon. Governor has obtained the details of teachers whose pension benefits remain unpaid due to incomplete investigations. Special initiatives will be launched under the Governor’s guidance to ensure that the necessary measures are taken to expedite the completion of the relevant investigations and facilitate the prompt payment of their pension benefits.
To prevent delays in the payment of pension benefits arising from deficiencies in documentation, it was decided that teachers should update their personal profile files while still in active service. Accordingly, under the instructions of the Hon. Governor, the Northern Provincial Ministry of Education implemented a two-phase mobile service to update the personal profile files of teachers across the Northern Province.
In the first phase, the mobile service was conducted on 18.07.2026 in the Education Zones of Jaffna, Valikamam, Thenmaradchy, Vadamaradchy, Mullaitivu, Kilinochchi North and Kilinochchi South.
Subsequently, today (01 August 2026), the mobile service was successfully conducted in the remaining Education Zones of Island, Madhu, Mannar, Thunukkaai, Vavuniya North and Vavuniya South.
A large number of teachers enthusiastically participated in both phases of the mobile service and updated their personal profile files. The teachers who benefited from the programme expressed their appreciation, stating that the initiative was highly beneficial and would help prevent delays in the processing of their pension benefits.
Meanwhile, the Hon. Governor stated that, based on the feedback received and the experiences gained from this year’s programme, he intends to further strengthen and expand the initiative for implementation in the coming year.
