A conductor who charged an excessive fare from a passenger has been fined Rs. 2,500.

According to Eng. S. Vimaleswaran, Chairman of the Northern Province Road Passenger Transport Authority, a conductor working on a private passenger bus operating on the Jaffna – Colombothurai route has been fined Rs. 2,500 for overcharging a passenger. In addition, a written assurance has been obtained from him stating that he will not engage in such practices in the future.

The incident occurred when the conductor charged a passenger more than the approved fare on the said private bus. The affected passenger immediately lodged a complaint with the officer in charge of the Jaffna Bus Stand under the Northern Province Road Passenger Transport Authority.

Based on this complaint, a prompt investigation was carried out by the Authority, during which the concerned conductor admitted to overcharging the passenger. Consequently, he was fined Rs. 2,500 and warned that strict legal action would be taken if he engages in such violations again. A written undertaking to this effect has also been obtained.

Chairman Eng. S. Vimaleswaran has urged the public to report without hesitation any incidents of overcharging beyond approved fares or any other inconveniences faced while using private buses. Complaints should be submitted promptly to the Authority with relevant evidence such as tickets, photographs, or videos.
