Foundation stone laid for the reconstruction of the Mankumban Vellakkadarkarai Jumma Mosque in the Velanai DS Division.

The foundation stone laying ceremony to commence the reconstruction of the Mankumban Vellakkadarkarai Jumma Mosque, located within the Velanai Divisional Secretariat Division in Jaffna, was held successfully this morning – on Sunday, 02 August 2026, at the mosque premises.

The event was attended by the Deputy Minister of Religious and Cultural Affairs, Hon. Muneer Munaffar, as the chief guest. Representing the Hon. Governor of the Northern Province, N. Vethanayagan, the Secretary to the Governor, Sivapathasundaram Sathiyaselan, also participated and graced the occasion.

The event was organized by the Vellakkadarkarai Jumma Mosque Administration and the Construction Committee. It commenced with the recitation of the Holy Quran by Mawlavi A.M. Abdul Azeez (Qasimi), President of the All Ceylon Jamiyyathul Ulama (Jaffna–Kilinochchi Branch). Following the welcome address by the mosque’s Treasurer, Alhaj S.H.M. Niyas, A. Anton Jesuthasan, Secretary of the Mankumban Village Development Society, delivered a special address as the Tamil representative of the village.

Among those who attended the event were Jaffna District Members of Parliament Hon. J. Rajeevan and Hon. K. Ilangkumaran, Puttalam District Member of Parliament Hon. M. Faisal, Chairman of the Velanai Pradeshiya Sabha Hon. Sivalingam Ashokkumar, Velanai Divisional Secretary T. Akilan, mosque administrators, members of the construction committee and members of the public. Following the speeches by the distinguished guests, the main foundation stone laying ceremony for the mosque’s reconstruction took place. The event concluded with the Dhuhr prayer.
