It was decided at the meeting held under the chairmanship of Northern Project Hon. Governor N. Vethanayahan to restart the project of desilting ponds that was started last year in the Jaffna district next July.
A special discussion regarding desilting ponds was held today, Thursday (11th of June, 2026), at the Northern Province Governor’s Secretariat.
It was deeply discussed regarding the positive impacts caused through the desilting projects implemented at Kantharodai Pond last year and the challenges faced while implementing the project.
The governor recalled here the favourable comment expressed by the commissioner general of Agarian Commissioner, who stated at the discussion already held at the governor’s secretariat regarding the project of desilting the pond this year.
It was decided at this meeting to desilt ponds in the Valukkaiyaru area and to carry out those activities through the relevant local authorities. Accordingly, it was decided to hold a special discussion under the leadership of the secretary of the Northern Province Ministry of Agriculture, with the participation of the Irrigation Department, the Department of Agrarian Services, divisional secretaries, and the honourable heads of the local authorities, in order to implement this project expeditiously.
Furthermore, the governor took steps on this occasion to secure the full cooperation of the Department of Surveying in order to facilitate the immediate commencement of desilting work on several ponds for which approvals had already been granted by the Commissioner General of Agrarian Services. Accordingly, agreement was reached to begin the fieldwork as soon as possible.
Many people participated in this discussion, including the Governor’s Secretary, the Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, the Additional District Secretary of Jaffna District, the Director of the Provincial Irrigation Department, the Assistant Commissioner of the Department of Agrarian Services, the Assistant Commissioner of Local Government, the Jaffna District Irrigation Engineer, and volunteers coordinating the desilting of activities.
