A special meeting was held under the chairmanship of the Honourable Governor regarding the improvement of projects implemented with the aim of improving the health sector

A special meeting was held under the chairmanship of the Honourable Governor today (11th June 2026) at the Governor’s Secretariat regarding the improvements of projects implemented through the help of the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank and the Indian government with the aim of improving the Northern Province sector.

A fund has been allocated through the Asian Development Bank for purchasing medical equipment, modernising the operation theatres, establishing digitalised data centres and infrastructure, and repairing works of base hospitals in the Northern Province.

Accordingly, funds have been allocated for the hospitals of Tellipalai (Rs. 130 million), Point Pedro (Rs. 58.5 million), Chavakacheri (50 million), and Kayts (Rs. 43.5 million), and most of the bid papers have already been called.

Moreover, funds have been allocated to the operation theatres of hospitals, eye medical clinics, and the purchasing of equipment for places in the Mullaitivu District such as Mallavi (Rs 17 million), Maangulam (Rs 20.5 million), and Puthukkudiyiruppu (Rs 35 million). Further projects are to be implemented for the base hospital of Mulangavil in Kilinochchi (36.5 million), the base hospital of Chettikkulam in Vavuniya (54.3 million), and the base hospital of Murungan (36.73 million).

Fourteen packages of projects are being implemented to improve the preliminary health structure with assistance from the World Bank. Bids have been called for five of these packages. During this meeting, it was decided to send estimates of the remaining plans to the office within two weeks. It was directed by the governor to present the immediate request to get the fund allocation for the technological personnel needed for this project on a contract basis from the same plan.

It was discussed regarding the development services that are to be implemented at the hospitals of Mannar and Mullaitivu District with the help of the Indian government. It was mentioned that works for preparing bidding documents to start the developing works of Mannar District Hospital will be submitted soon.

The governor instructed the authorities to complete plans with the assistance of foreign funding within the stipulated time period; if we act efficiently like this only, we can get more foreign financing in the future for the development of our province.

Most of them were participated at this meeting including, Chief Secretary of Northern Province, Secretary to the Governor, Deputy Chief Secretaries (Finance, Planning, Engineering), Director of the Department of Buildings for the Northern Province, Director of Department of Irrigation, The Acting Provincial Director of Health Services for the Northern Province and Deputy Planning Director Were Also Participated at this meeting.
