Full cooperation from all parties, including the public and private sectors, is essential for the development of the tourism industry. You can inform us of your problems at any time. – Hon. Governor N. Vethanayahan stated.

The Hon. Governor of the Northern Province, N. Vethanayahan, stated that the contribution of the private sector is extremely important in developing the tourism industry of the Northern Province. He also noted that the government will provide all necessary facilities required by private sector stakeholders to promote this sector.

The Governor made these remarks while addressing a special meeting held this morning – on Wednesday 11 March 2026, at Valampuri Hotel in Jaffna with tourism sector stakeholders from the Jaffna District.

Continuing his speech, he stated that a favorable environment has now been created through the Ministry of Tourism. The Hon. Deputy Minister of Tourism, who is scheduled to visit here on the 23rd, will conduct detailed discussions regarding tourism development plans for the years 2027 and 2028. This is an excellent opportunity that has come our way. We fully understand the role that government departments must play in implementing these plans and the need to provide the necessary facilities for you as members of the private sector.

With regard to transport infrastructure facilities, the services currently available through Palaly International Airport remain limited. There is a pressing need to extend its runway. Likewise, the Kankesanthurai Port will soon be renovated with financial assistance from the Government of India. One of the major issues faced by our tourism industry is the long travel time between Jaffna and Colombo. Overland travel takes about 8 to 9 hours. During a recent visit, the Hon. Minister of Civil Aviation and Ports mentioned that, as a solution to this challenge, a dedicated terminal for domestic services from Bandaranayake International Airport will be established in the future.

If you identify and submit new projects that can enhance tourism in your respective areas, it will be easier for us to implement them quickly. It has been learned that there are procedural difficulties in obtaining approvals from the Coastal Conservation Department when implementing certain projects. However, we will resolve those issues very soon. You must also provide your suggestions in this regard. Furthermore, a large number of tourists from India are currently visiting Jaffna. Taking this into account, we are also implementing several initiatives related to the “Ramayana Trail.”

Full cooperation from everyone, including both government and private sectors, is essential for developing the tourism industry. You can bring your concerns to us at any time. Together we will gradually address the existing shortcomings and move forward,” the Governor further stated.

Among those present at this special event were the Additional District Secretary of Jaffna District K. Sivaharan; the Trade and Consular Administrative Officer of the Consulate General of India in Jaffna, Ramya Chandrasekaran; the Chairman of the Northern Province Tourism Development Bureau, Dr. J. Vivekananthan; chairmen of local government bodies; heads of relevant departments; hotel owners; and administrators.
