On the occasion of Vesak, which commemorates the three sacred events in the life of Lord Gautama Buddha—his Birth, Enlightenment, and Parinibbana—I extend my heartfelt greetings to all Buddhist brothers and sisters living in the Northern Province.
The Buddhist Dharma is a timeless teaching of peace that has endured through the ages. Founded upon the four pillars of loving-kindness, compassion, sympathetic joy, and equanimity, this doctrine preached by Lord Gauthama Buddha continues to serve as a guiding light for people across the world.
The Northern Province is a distinguished land where people of diverse ethnicities and religions live together in harmony. At a time when we continue our journey from the scars of war towards reconciliation and peace, the values of peace, forgiveness, and mutual understanding taught by the Buddha Dharma remain indispensable guides for us all.
Beyond being a religious observance, Vesak is also a remarkable cultural festival that, for thousands of years, has reflected the unique identity, collective responsibility, and artistic creativity of the people of Sri Lanka. Activities such as meditation, Dharma sermons, almsgiving, and devotional songs play a significant role in fostering mutual understanding and harmony among communities.
The Vesak celebration, which promotes mutual understanding and unity among all communities, stands as a symbol of reconciliation. I invite everyone to further embrace in their daily lives the noble values of the Buddha Dharma, founded upon non-violence, compassion, and love for all living beings.
May this Vesak Day bring peace and serenity to the hearts of all through the cooling influence of the Dharma. With the hope that the Northern Province will continue to prosper and advance in unity, I extend my warm wishes to everyone.
