Whether it is a school or any other institution, its growth and decline depend entirely on its leadership, stated the Hon. Governor of the Northern Province, N. Vethanayahan.
The second day’s event of the 150th anniversary celebrations of Victoria College, Chulipuram, Jaffna, was held today – on Saturday, 25 July 2026, at the school’s open auditorium. This historic event, held under the chairmanship of the school’s Principal, Mrs. K. Sulabamathi, was graced by the Hon. Governor of the Northern Province, N. Vethanayahan, as the Chief Guest.
As the highlight of the celebration, a special commemorative publication titled *”Victorian Viththakam”*, showcasing the 150-year history of Victoria College, was officially launched. The event was also attended by the Hon. Chairman of the Valikamam West Pradeshiya Sabha, Victorian S. Jeyanthan, and the Valikamam Zonal Director of Education , Mrs. Jamuna Rajaseelan, as special guests.
The event commenced with the ceremonial lighting of the traditional lamp and prayers. It featured a welcome dance, group music, Patham dance, a Sinhala song, the dance drama Kalinga Narththanam, and the stage play Thuppal Parisu, among many other cultural performances. Special awards were also presented to students, including those who had gained admission to universities.
Delivering the Chief Guest’s address, the Hon. Governor further stated:
“Founded in 1876 as a humble primary school, Victoria College has the distinguished honor of bringing English education, which was once limited to urban schools, to rural students as well, serving as a beacon of light for Valikamam West. It is a blessed institution that has produced many distinguished educators, doctors, engineers, and community leaders for this country.
If an unsuitable principal is appointed to a well performing school, that school can decline rapidly within a short period. Likewise, if a struggling school is led by a visionary principal, it can reach the heights of success in a short time. I have every confidence that your current principal is an excellent leader who will guide this school toward many more milestones.
Students should not spend all their time running after studies and remain confined to rooms like bookworms. Although the current examination oriented education system has placed you in such an environment, this situation is going to change. The new education reforms to be introduced next year will provide vocational education suited to the modern world and equip you with the skills needed to face practical challenges.
At one time, Victoria College had a proud history of being a formidable force in football, hockey, and athletics, winning numerous championship trophies. You must strive to reclaim that golden era. In addition to academics, participating in extracurricular activities naturally develops resilience in the face of failure and nurtures leadership qualities.
Some officials within our government system lack sufficient leadership qualities and humanity. In keeping with the saying, ‘Learn thoroughly what is worth learning, and then live according to that learning,’ one should live with good character that reflects one’s education. Even if all services become digital in the future and artificial intelligence and computers dominate the world, it is only if those operating them possess compassion and leadership that the positions they hold will truly benefit our people,” the Governor emphasized in his speech.
The event was also attended by honored guests Victorian S. Murugavel, Victorian R. Srirangan, and Victorian N. Sivaruban. In addition, students, teachers, former principals, past pupil and many others participated in the celebration.
