As these canals had not been dredged for several decades, they had become a major cause of severe flooding disasters during the rainy seasons. A special project to dredge these canals is currently being accelerated.
As part of this initiative, the dredging of the 1.5 kilometer long main canal from Kanakambikaikulam to Kilinochchikulam in the Kilinochchi District was inspected in person today – on Tuesday, 21 April 2026, in the Rathinapuram area by Hon. Governor of Northern Province N. Vethanayahan and District Secretary of Kilinochchi S. Muralitharan.
These works are being carried out with an allocation of 5 million rupees from the Northern Provincial Council’s recurrent fund. Accordingly, the canal is being dredged and widened to approximately 10 meters.
During the inspection, the Hon. Governor inquired from the irrigation engineer about the challenges and practical issues encountered in implementing the project.
Officials pointed out that certain individuals who have encroached upon the canal’s reserved land are causing obstructions to the work. Following this, the Governor instructed the District Secretary to take appropriate action to immediately remove such encroachments with police assistance and to continue the work without any hindrance.
