Special Discussion on protecting the Environment from Sand Mining activities was held on 23rd of June 2021 at 10 am at Governor’s Secretariat under the Chairmanship of Governor of the Northern Province Hon. Mrs.P.S.M Charles. The Secretary to the Governor, the Assistant Secretary to the Governor, Additional Government Agent (Land), Assistant District Secretary, Divisional secretary of Maruthankeni, Staff from Department Of Forest Conservation and Department Of Wildlife Conservation were also present at the discussion.
Curbing the Illegal sand mining and distribution in Nagar kovil and Kudarappu within the boundary of Maruthankeni Divisional Secretariat was discussed in detail. Hon. Governor instructed the respective authorities to release the school and religious places under the governance of the Department Of Wildlife Conservation through the Divisional secretary. Further, Hon. Governor directed the respective authorities to choose an appropriate place which is under the governance of the Department Of Forest Conservation and Department Of Wildlife Conservation to obtain the sand for routine development activities without harming the environment and instructed relevant authorities to monitor the places each day and to submit the reports.
Further, Hon. Governor instructed to select a new place for pasture land within Maruthankeni Divisional Secretariat Boundary and also said that steps would be taken to obtain additional funds to develop that area.
