Road Safety Awareness Activities Commence

With the aim of creating a sense of responsibility among all road users to prevent road traffic accidents and reduce fatalities and injuries, road safety awareness activities have been initiated by the Northern Province Road Passenger Transport Authority in accordance with the instructions of the Hon. Minister of Transport, Bimal Rathnayake and the Hon. Governor of the Northern Province, N. Vethanayahan.

A road traffic accident awareness training workshop jointly organized by the Northern Province Road Passenger Transport Authority and the Jaffna Medical Association was held today – on Wednesday, 19 August 2026, at the Poonakary Divisional Secretariat Conference Hall under the chairmanship of the Divisional Secretary of Poonakary Division. The event was conducted with the objectives of promoting safe road use, raising awareness regarding the causes and consequences of road traffic accidents, and strengthening responsible road use.

The Chairman of the Northern Province Road Passenger Transport Authority, Engineer S. Vimaleswaran, delivered the welcome address, followed by an explanation on the common causes of road traffic accidents and their consequences by the Secretary of the Jaffna Medical Association, Consultant Paediatrician Dr. Balasubramaniam Sayanthan.

Dr. Sivanandan Sasikaran, Consultant Surgeon and Orthopaedic Surgeon at Jaffna Teaching Hospital, provided an explanation on road safety practices including wearing seat belts, using helmets and speed control. The President of the Jaffna Medical Association and Judicial Medical Officer of Jaffna Teaching Hospital, Dr. Rudrapathy Mayoorathan, spoke on the legal consequences of road traffic accidents.

This awareness activity will not be limited to a single event but will be conducted continuously throughout the province. Accordingly, similar awareness training programmes will be conducted in other Divisional Secretariats, further strengthening public awareness on road safety with the guidance of medical and legal experts.

Through this initiative, which is being carried out with the objective that ‘Road Safety is Everyone’s Responsibility’, measures will continue to promote safe road use and further strengthen social responsibility towards reducing fatalities and injuries caused by road traffic accidents.
