The Governor emphasized that developing leadership qualities among students is one of the most important priorities in the present context. He noted that nothing can be achieved without leadership skills, and that such qualities can only be cultivated by engaging students in co-curricular activities alongside formal academic education.
These remarks were made during a special awareness discussion held today – on Tuesday 17 March 2026, at the Governor’s Secretariat under the chairmanship of Hon. Governor. The meeting, organized by the National Cadet Corps (NCC), aimed to brief Zonal Education Directors and school principals on its activities and future plans in the Northern Province.
Continuing his address, the Governor stated:
“Our society raises students with a focus on textbooks and exam results, rather than encouraging their participation in co-curricular activities that develop their individual talents. Only by engaging students in sports and training programs such as those conducted by the National Cadet Corps can they become disciplined and responsible citizens, while also developing strong leadership qualities.
Although some school principals extend their support, it has been reported to me by cadet officers that certain principals and teachers do not provide adequate cooperation for National Cadet Corps activities or encourage student participation. Based on their request, this awareness session has been organized by bringing together Zonal Directors of Education and school principals.”
During the meeting, the National Cadet Corps delivered a special presentation outlining its activities.
It was explained that the primary objective of the Corps is to develop leadership, self-confidence, personality, and decision-making skills among students, especially in challenging situations. It was further highlighted that the program serves as a strong foundation for nurturing future national leaders.
Students are provided with training and evaluations at group, unit, provincial, and national levels, including drill training, physical fitness, leadership training, presentation skills, cultural assessments, hostel management, confidence-building, and shooting training. Annual national-level sports competitions and tours to SAARC countries are also included in their programs.
It was also pointed out that since the National Cadet Corps operates under Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Defence, there is a misconception—particularly in Jaffna—that it is linked to military service or intended to produce combat soldiers. Responding to this, the Director of the National Cadet Corps clarified:
“This is not an organization that produces soldiers for warfare. The primary aim of the National Cadet Corps is to create a disciplined and leadership-oriented student community. It has no connection whatsoever with military service. We hope to change this misconception among the public.”
Following this, students from Vembadi Girls’ High School in Jaffna, presented on their experiences and activities within the National Cadet Corps.
The meeting was attended by the Secretary to the Governor, the Secretary of the Provincial Ministry of Education, Zonal Directors of Education, school principals, Major General A.B.C.R. Premathilaka (Director of the National Cadet Corps), training division officials, the Northern Province coordinator of NCC and several other senior officials.
