Kilinochchi District Special Coordination Committee Meeting Held with the Participation of Hon. Minister Bimal Rathnayake

The Hon. Ministry of Transport, Highways and Urban Development has paid special attention to the expansion of the four-lane road within the Kilinochchi town area and to the installation of traffic signal lights to reduce road accidents.

The Kilinochchi District Special Coordination Committee meeting was held today – on Wednesday 11 February 2026, at the District Secretariat, with the participation of the Hon. Minister of Transport, Highways and Urban Development, Bimal Rathnayake.

The discussion commenced with the welcome address delivered by the Kilinochchi District Secretary, S. Muralitharan. The key matters discussed were as follows:

* Extensive deliberations were held on expanding the four-lane road at required locations to ease and improve traffic congestion in the Kilinochchi town area, as well as on constructing bridges and installing traffic signal lights to ensure safer transportation.

* Discussions were also held regarding the current condition of roads and bridges under the Road Development Department, as well as rural roads belonging to local authorities, and on prioritizing their rehabilitation.

* Special attention was given to delays in projects currently being implemented in the district by the Road Development Authority. Officials were advised on the factors hindering the expeditious completion of these projects and on measures to address those obstacles.

Among those who participated in the discussion were the Hon. Governor of the Northern Province, N. Vethanayahan; Hon. Member of Parliament S. Sribavanantharajah; the Chief Secretary of the Northern Province; Additional Secretaries of the Ministry; the Secretary of the Northern Provincial Ministry of Local Government; heads of the Road Development and Urban Development Departments; Divisional Secretaries; Chairmen of Local Authorities; and senior police officers.
