Under the National Housing Development Authority’s resettlement housing program in the Northern Province, funds amounting to 2,726 million rupees have been allocated this year to construct 1,363 new houses. Beneficiaries have been selected, and Minister of Housing, Construction and Water Supply Hon. Susil Ranasinghe issued instructions to officials to complete this housing project within the next 6 months.
The special discussion on the new resettlement housing project to be implemented in the Northern Province was held today – on Wednesday 11 February 2026 evening, at the Kilinochchi District Secretariat.
The discussion, attended by Minister of Housing Hon. Susil Ranasinghe, Minister of Transport, Highways and Urban Development Hon. Bimal Rathnayake, and Hon. Governor of Northern Province N. Vethanayahan, examined in detail the implementation of this project.
While a total of 7,306 houses are needed in the Northern Province, it has been decided to construct 1,363 houses in the first phase in 2026. Funds have been allocated at 2 million rupees per house. The remaining houses are planned to be constructed and completed within the next 3 years.
During the discussion, the Governor and District Secretaries brought to the attention of the Ministers the housing projects initiated by the National Housing Development Authority in 2019 but abandoned midway. The Ministers assured that they would discuss this with His Excellency the President and obtain a special solution for it.
It was stated that the list of beneficiaries for the National Housing Development Authority’s resettlement housing program can be finalized and publicly displayed within the next 2 or 3 weeks. Considering the challenges in procuring raw materials and labor for the project, Minister Susil Ranasinghe instructed that the houses be completed within the 6-month period under very strict monitoring.
Hon. Parliamentarian S. Sri Bavanandarajah requested special attention to the high transportation costs for raw materials to houses being constructed in the island regions of the Jaffna District, particularly in Delft. It was stated that this request would be favorably considered.
The discussion was attended by the District Secretaries of the five districts in the Northern Province, Additional District Secretaries, Ministry Secretaries, officials of the National Housing Development Authority, and many others.
