“In the Northern Province, except for Jaffna, many long roads in the other four districts are in need of repair,” – Hon. Governor.

The Hon. Governor of the Northern Province, N. Vethanayahan, this Saturday morning – 01st November 2025, handed over two newly constructed causeways—built by the Road Development Department on the Bramanalankulam–Parappukadanthan road in the Vavuniya District—for public use. These causeways now provide year-round access to an area that was previously inaccessible during the rainy season.

The two river crossings were built under the supervision of the Vavuniya District Office of the Road Development Department with funding of Rs. 45.49 million from the Provincial Specific Development Grant. One crossing, 90 meters long and made up of twelve 4-feett-diameter stone pipes, cost Rs. 29.63 million to complete. The other, measuring 100 meters with five 3-feet-diameter stone pipes, was constructed at a cost of Rs. 15.86 million. Both projects were completed by separate contractors within the planned schedule.

Speaking at the handover ceremony, the Hon. Governor stated that the development of rural and connecting roads is being effectively carried out under the tenure of the National People’s Power Government, which has given high priority to infrastructure development.

He noted that, except for Jaffna, many long roads across the other four districts of the Northern Province are in need of repair, and expressed confidence that all such projects would be completed within the next three years during the term of the present government.

The Governor also extended his appreciation to the Provincial Director of the Road Development Department, the Vavuniya District Chief Engineer, the Executive Engineer, and their respective teams for their excellent work in constructing the river crossings on this road. He further thanked the contractors for their cooperation and for completing the projects within the stipulated time frame.

Speaking at the event, the head of the Farmers’ Organization said that this road serves as an important route leading to the Madu Temple in the Mannar District. He added that it is also the main road used by residents to access essential services, including the hospital.
“During the rainy season, this road becomes impassable, and until now, no one had taken steps to repair it. We are therefore very grateful that it has finally been reconstructed,” he said.

The Provincial Director of the Road Development Department – Northern Province, Mrs. V. Abirami; Vavuniya District Chief Engineer, Mr. K. Kaushik; Executive Engineers from Vavuniya and Mannar; Technical Officers; the Grama Niladhari; members of the public; and many others participated in today’s event.
