The Hon. Governor of Northern Province, N. Vethanayagan, has emphasized the need for local authorities to assist in transforming the Northern Province into a developed region. Speaking at an event held on December 11, 2024, at S.S. Hall in Point Pedro, which marked Local Government Month, Reading Month, and a cultural festival, the Hon. Governor underscored the importance of changing the approach of local authorities to promote investment.
In his speech, the Hon. Governor stated, “The Northern Province should be transformed into a developed province. To achieve this, our local authorities must evolve to attract and foster investment.”
He further highlighted the unique and distinct cultures of the Tamil people, emphasizing their significance in preserving heritage. He explained that cultural festivals like the one held during the event are crucial for sustaining these traditions. “It is our duty to ensure the preservation and sustainability of our cultures. Welcoming, hospitality, and gratitude are fundamental aspects of our culture. Unfortunately, we have strayed far from these values,” he added.
The Governor also pointed out the lack of hospitality in some government departments, stating that there are instances where no one is available to welcome people seeking services. “This is unhealthy,” he remarked. “Public service should be prompt, efficient, and kind. Every department must be prepared to serve the public with respect and quality service.”
Addressing the issue of youth migration, the Hon. Governor said, “Many young people from our province are migrating abroad in search of employment opportunities. It is our responsibility to create jobs for them here. To do so, we must actively promote investment.” He shared an example from his time as District Secretary, when investors showed interest in the region but left after encountering demands for bribes. “That was the past situation,” he noted. “However, the current government is very different. Several investors are ready to come to our province. We must welcome them and create a conducive environment.”
He concluded by stressing the role of local authorities in supporting investors: “Local authorities must not create obstacles for investors. Instead, we should work together towards the common goal of transforming our province into a developed region. Cooperation is key.”
