The Hon. Governor of the Northern Province, N. Vethanayahan, personally visited today – on Thursday 24 September 2026, the tourism development activities being carried out at Akkarai Beach, which falls within the Valikamam East Pradeshiya Sabha and Kankesanthurai Beach, which comes under the Valikamam North Pradeshiya Sabha.
During the visit, the Governor also personally inspected the situation concerning the complaints submitted by members of the public regarding the Puttur 9th Mile Road within the Valikamam East Pradeshiya Sabha limits. As rehabilitation work on the said road is due to commence, the Governor instructed the relevant authorities to obtain the necessary technical advice and rehabilitate the road to the required standard.
Thereafter, the Governor personally inspected the ongoing rehabilitation work on Anthiranai Road, being carried out under the Provincial Specific Development Grant (PSDG) Fund and inquired about the progress of the work.
The Governor then visited the head office of the Valikamam East Pradeshiya Sabha and observed the activities being carried out there.
Subsequently, the Governor inspected the development activities being carried out at Akkarai Beach. Noting that Akkarai Beach possesses various natural resources and potential to be developed into an attractive tourist destination in the future, the Governor requested the relevant parties to prepare and submit development plans gradually, based on these resources and potential.
Following this, the Governor proceeded to Kankesanthurai Beach and inspected the development activities currently being carried out there. He also personally inspected the damage caused by coastal erosion. The Governor instructed that measures to rehabilitate these damages in the future be incorporated into the development plans for the coming year.
The Secretary to the Governor, the Commissioner of Provincial Department of Local Government of the Northern Province, the Regional Assistant Commissioner of Local Government for Jaffna District, the Hon. Chairman of the Valikamam North Pradeshiya Sabha, members of the Pradeshiya Sabha and the Secretaries of the respective Pradeshiya Sabhas, among others participated in this field visit.
