Hon. Governor Inspects Reconstruction Work on the Poovarasankulam – Cheddikulam Main Road Severely Damaged by the ‘Dithwa’ Disaster

The reconstruction of the Poovarasankulam – Cheddikulam Main Road, which was severely damaged during the ‘Dithwa’ disaster that occurred last year, is being expedited by the Northern Province Road Development Department. A special delegation led by the Hon. Governor of the Northern Province, N. Vethanayahan, visited the site today – on Friday 05 June 2026, to inspect the ongoing rehabilitation work.

Due to the devastating impact of the ‘Dithwa’ disaster, the asphalt surface along a section of the Poovarasankulam – Cheddikulam Main Road was completely washed away and thrown into the adjacent paddy fields. As a result, the road was extensively damaged to the extent that public transportation could not operate. The road is currently being reconstructed under the full supervision of the Road Development Department – Northern Province at a cost of Rs. 7 million.

In order to assess the progress of the reconstruction work and the current condition of the road on – site, the Hon. Deputy Minister, the District Secretary of Vavuniya, the Provincial Director of the Road Development Department – Northern Province, the Assistant Commissioner of Local Government -Vavuniya, and the District Engineer of the Road Development Department, along with other senior officials, joined the Hon. Governor during the inspection visit.
