The Hon. Governor of the Northern Province, N. Vethanayahan and Hon. Member of Parliament M. Jegatheeswaran personally visited and inspected today – on Tuesday 15 September 2026, the progress of the road and bridge construction works being carried out in Vavuniya District by the Provincial Department of Road Development – Northern Province.
During the visit, they inspected the bridge being constructed along the 1.86 kilometer section of the Nedunkerni – Koolankulam Road, as well as the construction of a 200 meter long concrete road and a causeway along the 5.55 kilometer section of the Piramanalankulam – Parappukkadanthaan Road.
The bridge being constructed on the Nedunkerni – Koolankulam Road is being carried out at an estimated cost of Rs. 65 million. In addition, the road in the relevant section will be widened and rehabilitated. This project is being implemented through the Ditwa Reconstruction Fund.
Meanwhile, the construction of a causeway with a 200 meter long concrete road along the 5.55 kilometer section of the Piramanalankulam – Parappukkadanthaan Road is being carried out at a cost of Rs. 40 million. This project is being implemented through the Provincial Specific Development Grant (PSDG) Fund.
The Governor, who personally inspected both locations, observed that the development works were being carried out efficiently and expeditiously, encouraged the workers and commended them for their dedicated work. He also stressed the importance of maintaining the quality and timelines of the works so that the people can benefit.
It is expected that such road and bridge development works being carried out to improve transportation facilities for the people of Vavuniya District will reduce transportation difficulties during the rainy season and strengthen connectivity between the areas.
During this inspection, Chief Engineer K. Kawsikan of the Office of the Chief Engineer of the Road Development Department – Northern Province and the contractors of the respective projects also participated.
