A discussion was held under the chairmanship of the Honorable Governor of the Northern Province, N. Vethanayahan, on measures to construct a new multi-departmental building at the Kilinochchi District General Hospital. The proposed facility is intended to address the space constraints currently faced by the hospital’s physiotherapy unit, while also accommodating the hospital’s future medical and healthcare requirements.
A discussion on the construction of a new building at the Kilinochchi District General Hospital, which will accommodate several departments, including the physiotherapy unit, was held today – on Thursday, 10 September 2026, at the Governor’s Secretariat.
Representatives of the Patients’ Welfare Society of the Kilinochchi District General Hospital provided a detailed account of the space constraints and overcrowding currently affecting the physiotherapy unit. They noted that, due to these limitations, some patients are compelled to travel to Chavakachcheri Hospital to obtain the necessary treatment.
Subsequently, a proposal was put forward to construct a new building with financial assistance from the Patients’ Welfare Society.
Commenting on the proposal, the Director of the Provincial Department of Buildings stated that the proposed building complex should be developed based on comprehensive planning that takes into consideration the long-term requirements of the Kilinochchi District General Hospital. He emphasized that, in addition to making optimal use of the available land within the hospital premises, adequate space should be allocated for other relevant medical departments to accommodate the hospital’s future needs when designing and constructing the new building.
Noting that the construction of the new building would require substantial funding, the Governor stated that preliminary steps to advance the project could be initiated through the Government’s financial allocation for the coming year.
In the meantime, the Governor requested that a comprehensive assessment be conducted to determine the necessity and suitability of the proposed building. He further instructed that a report, prepared through the Department of Buildings and taking into consideration the hospital’s long-term requirements, be submitted.
The discussion was attended by the Secretary to the Governor, the Secretary to the Provincial Ministry of Health, the Deputy Chief Secretary (Finance), the Regional Director of Health Services of Kilinochchi District, the Director of the Kilinochchi District General Hospital, the Director of the Provincial Department of Buildings, representatives of the Patients’ Welfare Association and other relevant officials.
