Allocation of land should be for paddy cultivation in the manner of ensuring the benefit of farmers who are in poverty

Northern Province Hon. Governor N. Vethanayahan emphasized that when allocating the land for yala cultivation, those allocations should be progress in the manner of being useful for the farmers who are under the poverty line.

The Mannar District Coordination Committee meeting was held this morning (i.e., Tuesday, 12th May 2026) at the District Secretariat Auditorium. Hon. Upali Samarasinghe, Chairman of the District Coordinating Committee, and Hon. Deputy Governor of Cooperative Development presided over the meeting, which started with a welcome speech addressed by K. Kanageswaran under the poverty line.

Matters that were not analyzed at the Coordinating Committee meeting on 29.04.2026 have been taken into consideration.

As a first phase, district-level issues have been analyzed at the district level. In the meantime, conflicts prevail in allocating the lands for Yala cultivation have been deeply discussed. Even though various matters, including the provision of lands through the auction, had been discussed, it was decided to arrange a special meeting. The Hon. Governor pointed out that allocation of land should be in the manner of ensuring the wealth of farmers under poverty situation.

At the meeting, a request was made that the Mannar Pradeshiya Sabha should expedite the issuance of its approval regarding the commencement of a tourist boat transport service centered on the Mannar sandbanks.

Finally, discussions were also held and decisions were reached regarding various development projects and requests that had been examined at the Regional Coordination Committee meetings and submitted for the decision of the District Coordination Committee.

Many of them including, Honourable Members of Parliament M. Jegatheeswaran, Selvam Adaikalanathan, Kader Mastan, Northern Province Chief Secretary Mrs. Thanuja Murugeson, secretaries of provincial ministries, the Deputy Chief Secretary (Administration), honourable chairpersons of local government bodies, heads of provincial and central government departments, members of the security forces, and representatives of civil society organizations were participated at this meeting.
