A special discussion between the Hon. Governor of the Northern Province, N. Vethanayahan, and the Hon. Deputy Minister of Tourism, Ruwan Gunasekara, on the integrated development of the tourism sector in the Northern Province was held today – on Tuesday 04 August 2026, at the Governor’s Secretariat.
During the meeting, the Governor highlighted the ‘Gowtharimunai tourism development project’ in the Kilinochchi District. He also noted that he expects the cooperation and assistance of the Ministry of Tourism to improve the area’s basic infrastructure facilities.
Furthermore, the Governor pointed out that although many investors are keen to invest in the tourism sector in the Northern Province, there are delays in obtaining approvals from the Forest Department, the Department of Wildlife, and the Department of Coastal Conservation, among others.
The Deputy Minister of Tourism, who took note of the Governor’s requests and observations, held detailed discussions with the Governor on promoting tourism in the province and on how to expedite the implementation of integrated district-level tourism development plans.
Among those who participated in the discussion were Hon. Member of Parliament J. Rajeevan, the Secretary to the Governor, the Chairman of the Northern Province Tourism Development Authority, the Private Secretary to the Governor and the Coordinator to the Chairman of the Jaffna District Coordinating Committee, along with several others.
