The success of a college lies in shaping students in a way that enables them to serve the community. Colleges must cultivate leadership qualities and character in their students, said Northern Province Hon. Governor N. Vethanayahan.
The opening ceremony of a three-storey building complex ac comprising a technology unit and library built at a cost of Rs. 51.88 million under the “Nearest School is the Best School” programme and the foundation-laying ceremony for a new building for the primary section, funded with Rs. 127.46 million from the Provincial Specific Development Grant (PSDG) Fund, were held today – on Wednesday (04 August 2026), at Tellipalai Mahajana College under the chairmanship of Principal R. Pushparatnam.
Guests were formally welcomed, after which the building opening ceremony took place, followed by the foundation-laying ceremony for the new building, and then the stage proceedings.
Speaking at the event, the Governor recalled his own days as a student at the college, and noted with pride that he and current Parliamentarian S. Sribavananthararaja had studied together in the same class. Recalling with gratitude the teachers and principals who had shaped him into what he is today, he said that while physical resources are important, the true success of a school lies in shaping students into well-rounded individuals capable of serving society.
The Governor stated that the current government, guided by His Excellency the President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and the Hon. Prime Minister, is working intensively to build an education system suited to the future. He said that everyone should come forward to make use of the government’s commitment to developing the Northern Province in order to uplift both the school and the province. He noted that it was commendable that this school, which had suffered major setbacks due to war and displacement, was now rising again, and concluded his address by wishing that the school would continue to produce many students the community could be proud of.
The event was also attended and graced by Hon. Minister of Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean Resources R. Chandrasekhar, Hon. Parliamentarian S. Sribavanantharaja, Secretary of the Provincial Ministry of Education M. Patrick Diranjan, Hon. Chairman of the Valikamam North Pradeshiya Sabha S. Sugirthan, Coordinator to the Chairman of the Jaffna District Coordinating Committee S. Kabilan, Valikamam Zonal Director of Education Mrs. Jamuna Rajaseelan, along with many old students, teachers, and students.
