A special discussion on developing the Poonagari, Gowthaarimunai areas into a premier tourism destination was held today – on Friday, 26 June 2026, at the Governor’s Secretariat under the chairmanship of the Hon. Governor of the Northern Province, N. Vethanayahan.
The meeting noted that the Urban Development Authority (UDA) has prepared a special master plan for the development of Gowthaarimunai as a tourism destination. It was further discussed that, in accordance with a resolution adopted by the District Coordination Committee, a special committee has been appointed to supervise the project, and applications have been invited from prospective investors.
During today’s discussion, detailed deliberations were held on several key matters, including improving the area’s infrastructure and securing the necessary technical expertise to support the project. The meeting also decided to invite representatives of the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) to participate in further discussions and provide guidance on the proposed development.
The special discussion was attended by the Secretary to the Governor of the Northern Province, the Secretary to the Provincial Ministry of Local Government, the Kilinochchi District Secretary, the Divisional Secretary of Poonagari, the Chairman of the Northern Province Tourism Development Bureau, the Private Secretary to the Governor and several other senior government officials.
