With people facing severe difficulties every rainy season, a new causeway built on the Kanthapuram–Rasendrankulam Road in the Vavuniya District was opened today – on Tuesday 15 September 2026, by Hon. Governor of the Northern Province N. Vethanayahan and Hon. Member of Parliament M. Jegatheeswaran, as a solution to this recurring problem.
This area had long posed an obstacle to people’s transport, with residents facing numerous difficulties due to flooding during the rainy season. Taking this into account, the project was undertaken to ease the transport of the people.
Carried out as part of works on a 2.70 kilometer stretch of the Kanthapuram–Rasendrankulam Road, the causeway featuring a 47 row waterway structure, 33.5 meters long and one and a half feet in diameter was constructed by the Provincial Road Development Department. The project, costing approximately Rs. 22 million, was funded through the Provincial Specific Development Grant (PSDG) Fund.
With the construction of this new causeway, transport difficulties faced by residents affected by flooding during the rainy season will be reduced and safe, uninterrupted transport facilities will now be available to the local people who use this road.
Speaking after opening the causeway, the Governor stated that all roads in the Northern Province would be progressively rehabilitated during the tenure of this government.
The Governor also noted that although the government’s development projects had faced disruptions due to various factors, including the Ditwah disaster and the Middle East war, no development work would be abandoned and that all such work would continue to be implemented.
Stating that the Provincial Road Development Department of the Northern Province has been performing exceptionally well in constructing roads, culverts, and bridges, the Governor commended the department’s staff.
The Governor further stated that development work would be carried out by directly visiting and observing the needs of the people, giving priority to their requirements.
The event was attended by K. Kawsikan, Chief Engineer of the Road Development Department’s Vavuniya District Chief Engineer’s Office, along with members of the Pradeshiya Sabha and representatives of community-level organizations.
