Highlighting that there has been progress in police operations in the Northern Province, Hon. Governor of the Northern Province N. Vethanayahan stressed the need for more intensive measures to control deadly drugs, prevent the activities of sand mafias, and control the situation where youth ride motorcycles at high speeds on roads, posing a threat to other road users.
A meeting between Hon. Governor of the Northern Province N. Vethanayahan and Dinesh Karunanayake, who has newly assumed duties as the Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police (SDIG) of the Northern Province, was held this morning – on Monday 24 August 2026, at the Governor’s Secretariat.
During the meeting, the Governor conveyed his congratulations to the newly appointed Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police and requested him to provide an excellent service to further strengthen law, order and public safety in the Northern Province.
During the meeting, Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police Dinesh Karunanayake recalled that he had served in Jaffna District during the period when the Governor had served as the District Secretary of Jaffna. Views regarding the situation in the Northern Province and the activities of the police were also exchanged.
Noting that there has been progress in police operations in the Northern Province in recent times, the Governor stressed the need to further strengthen measures to control the spread of deadly drugs, in particular.
The meeting also focused on preventing the activities of sand mafias involved in illegal sand mining and smuggling, as well as controlling the activities of youth who ride motorcycles at high speeds on roads, posing a threat to the public.
The need to coordinate with relevant government institutions on these matters and take continuous measures to ensure public safety and the rule of law was also discussed.
Jaffna Regional Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Jeyamaga also participated in the meeting.
