The opening ceremony of the new two-storey Learning Resource Centre building at Konavil Gandhi Primary School in Kilinochchi, constructed at a cost of Rs. 21 million under the Ministry of Education’s “Nearest School is the Best School” programme, was held this morning – on Tuesday, 23 June 2026.
The event was held under the patronage of the school principal, Mrs. V. Selvananthan. The Hon. Governor of the Northern Province, N. Vethanayahan, attended as the Chief Guest and officially declared the new building open for use by the students.
Addressing the gathering, the Hon. Governor commended the school community for maintaining the overall school environment, including its classrooms, to a very high standard. Although the school has limited physical resources, he particularly praised the effective utilization of available resources and the exemplary manner in which the school is being managed with efficiency, discipline, and orderliness.
In her keynote address, the school principal, Mrs. V. Selvananthan, drew the Governor’s attention to the needs of the school. In particular, she requested assistance in constructing a main hall and a boundary wall for the school, emphasizing their importance for the welfare and development of the students.
Among those who attended the ceremony were the Kilinochchi District Secretary, S. Muralitharan; the Kilinochchi South Zonal Director of Education, Mrs. Pratheepa Gayathiri Gajapathy; the Karachchi Divisional Education Officer, S. Tharmarathinam; the Kilinochchi District Coordinator of the Clean Sri Lanka Task Force, Maruthan Mohan; former principals of the school; principals of neighbouring schools; teachers; students; parents; and many others.
