Members of the Mayiliddy Resettlement Development Committee, who were engaged in a peaceful protest at the Jaffna District Secretariat premises demanding the release of their lands, today (Monday, 15th June 2026) met in person with the Honourable Governor of the Northern Province, N. Vethanayahan, and officially handed over a petition containing their demands.
In their petition, the members of the Mayiliddy Resettlement Development Committee pointed out that their people, who were displaced on June 15, 1990, are still living as refugees even after the completion of 36 years. They have put forward two main requests in their petition for the attention of the Honorable President.
The Gazette (No. 1810) concerning the High Security Zone, published on March 28, 2013, should be completely revoked.
As an initial step, the lands belonging to the people under the Grama Niladhari divisions J/248, J/251, J/255, and J/246, who have been continuously and peacefully struggling for the recovery of their lands in Mayiliddy, should be released.
Following the protest, they visited the Governor’s Secretariat and submitted this petition. After receiving the petition containing these demands of the people, the Honorable Governor immediately forwarded it to the Honorable President for appropriate and urgent action.
