The police must act in a manner that earns the trust of the people, and crimes can be fully controlled only when the public and the Police Department work together, stated the Honorable Governor of the Northern Province, N. Vethanayahan. He also emphasized that criminal activities cannot be controlled solely by the Police Department acting alone.
The new permanent building for the Kopay Police Station, which was established in 1966 and had been operating from temporary locations for the past 60 years, was officially inaugurated today (14th June 2026), Sunday. The Governor made the above statement while participating in and addressing the event together with the Minister of Public Security, Hon. Ananda Wijepala.
The Governor, who continued speaking at the event,
During the period when I served as the District Secretary, I received a large number of complaints from the public regarding the police. In particular, people complained that their complaints were not being accepted at police stations and that the police were maintaining friendly relations with the offenders who had harmed them. However, today that situation has changed. The strong leadership provided by the government led by Hon. President Anura Kumara Dissanayake is the reason for this change. Nevertheless, many more changes still need to take place in this sector.
I commend the police officers led by the Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police of the Northern Province. They are currently providing the best possible services within their capacity. In our Northern Province, particularly in the Jaffna District, the culture of violence, including the rise in sword attacks, has now been brought under control to some extent.
Physical resources are extremely essential for the police to carry out their services efficiently. In that regard, after a long period, they have today received the permanent building they needed. Through this, we can expect them to provide even better services.
The illegal sand mining and smuggling that had been taking place in Kilinochchi had caused significant damage. To ensure swift action on this matter, the Minister and District Coordinating Committee Chairman, Hon.Chandrasekar, and I met with the Deputy Inspector General of Police. During that meeting, he remarked with surprise, “In the past, politicians would come to us mainly to protect those involved in illegal activities. But you have come asking us to take strict action against them.” That is the truth. The present government will never stand behind illegal activities. He also appealed, saying, “As members of the public, you too must provide full cooperation to the police in order to eradicate such crimes.”
At the beginning of this event, guests were welcomed, followed by a police parade of honor. After that, the new police station building was officially opened and was toured by the dignitaries. Subsequently, stage events and a tree-planting ceremony within the police station premises were also held.
At this event, Members of Parliament Hon. K.Ilangkumaran, S.Sribavanandaraja, J.Rajeevan, the Inspector General of Police, the Jaffna District Secretary, the Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police of the Northern Province, the Jaffna District Army Commander, the liaison officer of the Chairman of the Jaffna District Coordinating Committee, and members of the public, among others, participated.
