A field day for the demonstration plot on introducing new paddy varieties suitable for salinity-affected paddy lands in the Kilinochchi District was held on 18.03.2026 at D8, Periya Paranthan, under the leadership of Mrs. M. Ezhini, Agriculture Instructor of the Kumarapuram Range.
On that day, several salt-tolerant paddy varieties with a maturity period of 3½ to 4 months—namely AT 354, Bg 369, IS Bg SL 20-Ay3, and IS Bg SL 19-182 were introduced to the farmers. These varieties had been established through manual transplanting.
The event was attended by the Assistant Director of Agriculture(Reserch), Paranthan, representatives from the Rice Research Station, the Deputy Director of Agriculture, Kilinochchi, subject Mater officer’s,religious leaders and a large number of farmers.
Mr. K. Kandasamy, who successfully implemented this demonstration plot, shared his experiences and views with the participants.
During the event, the invited guests advised that these varieties should be continuously cultivated in this area in the future and emphasized the importance of achieving higher yields.
