A special discussion was held under the chairmanship of the Honorable Governor of the Northern Province, N. Vethanayahan, to highlight the challenges faced by the ministries and departments operating under the Northern Provincial Council.
The meeting also focused on identifying the physical and human resource requirements of these institutions and presenting them at the sectoral oversight committee meetings of the central government’s program ministries in order to seek appropriate solutions.
Members of Parliament Hon. M. Jagatheeswaran and Hon. J. Rajeevan participated in the discussion held at the Northern Provincial Governor’s Secretariat on Saturday evening (14 February 2026).
The discussion examined in detail the needs of key sectors, including education, sports, cooperatives, social services, and industry.
The following issues were highlighted during the deliberations on the requirements of departments operating under the Ministry of Education:
The discussion emphasized the need to complete school building projects that were initiated under various programs in the past but remain unfinished. It also highlighted the urgency of procuring essential equipment for schools and addressing the shortage of non-academic staff. Participants further stressed the importance of securing the necessary cooperation to implement the activities of the Department of Cultural Affairs in an innovative and effective manner, while also meeting the infrastructure requirements of the sports sector.
Commenting on these matters, Hon. Member of Parliament M. Jagatheeswaran stated that he would raise and elaborate on these needs and challenges at the relevant program ministry’s oversight committee meeting.
In addition, matters pertaining to the Ministry of Women’s Affairs, Rehabilitation, Social Services, Cooperatives, and Industries were discussed in detail.
The discussion also focused on the current challenges and resource constraints faced by the Department of Cooperatives, the need to obtain assistance from the relevant Program Ministry to improve the basic facilities of elderly homes operating under the Department of Social Services, and measures to expand the activities of the Industrial Departments.
Commenting on these matters, Hon. Member of Parliament J. Rajeevan assured that he would take up the concerns and demands relating to these departments with the respective Program Ministries and initiate steps to secure appropriate solutions.
The discussion was attended by senior officials, including the Secretary to the Governor, Ministry Secretaries, Provincial Directors, Commissioners, and Heads of Departments.
