As someone who served as the District Secretary of Kilinochchi during the final stages of the war, I am well aware of the suffering endured by the people of this area. Our objective is to uplift the livelihoods of those affected. Not everyone who possesses wealth feels inclined to help, but the Durai family from Singapore has shown such a compassionate heart, stated the Hon. Governor of the Northern Province, N. Vethanayahan.
With financial contributions from Mr. and Mrs. T. T. Thurai and Miss. Saraseeja Raman from Singapore, and under the coordination of former Northern Provincial Council Member Mr. R. Jayasekaram, a programme to provide livelihood assistance to woman-headed households was held on Wednesday 28 January 2026 morning, at the Capacity Building Centre of the Kilinochchi District Secretariat.
The Governor made the above remarks while attending the event as the Chief Guest and distributing the assistance.
He further stated:
May God grant even greater prosperity to these benefactors who extend their help from Singapore with concern for our land and our people. I have just one heartfelt request to the selected beneficiaries. The only way you can repay these philanthropists who are helping you is by using this assistance properly, progressing in society, and achieving economic self-reliance.
My thanks to Jayasekaram, who coordinated and implemented this project. Whatever he begins, he does not rest until it is fully completed. Congratulations to him for selecting Kilinochchi for the first phase of this project, based on the presence of a highly capable District Secretary who can ensure its effective implementation in Kilinochchi, he said.
As the first phase of this programme, which aims to provide livelihood assistance to 1,000 woman-headed households living below the poverty line in the Northern Province, assistance was distributed today to 181 families from the Kilinochchi District.
A total sum of Rs. 14,624,400 has been spent for this purpose. The next phase of assistance will be expanded to the districts of Mullaitivu, Mannar, Vavuniya, and Jaffna.
The event was attended by Hon. Member of Parliament S. Sritharan, Kilinochchi District Secretary S. Muralitharan, Kilinochchi District Coordinator to the Chairman of the District Coordinating Committee Charles Vijayaratnam Jinoth, project coordinator and former Provincial Council Member R. Jayasekaram, officials of the District Secretariat, and beneficiaries.
