The Northern Province will soon shine as a rapidly rising province. This will certainly happen during the term of this government. So stated Hon. Governor of the Northern Province, N. Vethanayahan.
The inauguration ceremony of the renovation of the Karainagar Ceynor Boat Yard was held this evening, (On Thursday, 18th September 2025) at the Karainagar Ceynor Boat Yard. Hon. Minister Bimal Ratnayake, Minister of Transport, Highways, Ports and Civil Aviation, and Hon. Minister R. Chandrasekar, Minister of Fisheries, Aquatic Resources and Marine Resources, also participated in the event.
At the event, the design plan for the renovation of the boat yard was formally handed over.
Addressing the gathering, the Governor said: “When I was a child, I had heard that thousands of people were employed at this Ceynor establishment. Such was its reputation. Today, I am delighted to see its operations being resumed. Once again, this institution must provide employment to thousands as before. This government is carrying out many development works in the Northern Province and is also reviving industries. Through this, employment opportunities and income generation needed for our province will be achieved.
I would like to take this opportunity to extend my thanks to Hon. Minister Bimal Ratnayake, who is working with keen interest in the development of our province, and Hon. Minister E. Chandrasekar, who constantly asks what kind of assistance should be given to our province.”
Speaking next, Hon. Minister of Fisheries R. Chandrasekar said that this factory will be further expanded in the future and that employment here will be given exclusively to the people of this region.
Thereafter, Hon. Minister Bimal Ratnayake addressed the gathering. He said: “I have heard that Karainagar was once home to many wealthy people. But today, most of them are no longer here — they have moved to Jaffna and abroad. Now Karainagar is developing through the tourism industry. For such a region, the reopening of this factory is a remarkable achievement. Instead of relying on everything brought from outside as we have been used to, it is important that production takes place here itself.”
Also present at this event were Hon. Members of Parliament K. Ilankumaran, S. Sribavanantharaja, and J. Rajeevan, along with the Secretary of the Ministry of Fisheries, the Chairman of the Fisheries Corporation, the Director of Aquatic Resources, and the Chairman of the Ceynor Company.
