Steps have been initiated to clarify the matter regarding the differing requests put forward concerning the renaming of Nachchikuda Government Mixed School, based on relevant official government documents. Accordingly, the Hon. Governor of the Northern Province, N. Vethanayahan, granted a period of two weeks to submit documents relating to the name used since the school was established.
A special discussion regarding the renaming of Nachchikuda Government Mixed School in Kilinochchi and the procedures related to it was held this morning – on Thursday, 03 September 2026, at the Governor’s Secretariat. The Governor initially stated that a complaint had been made to the Prime Minister’s Office regarding this matter and that this discussion was being held in order to submit the relevant report in accordance with its request.
In his initial view, the Governor stated that it would be appropriate for the name used since the school was established to continue. At the same time, he stressed the need to approach the matter calmly and fairly, based on available official documents and solid evidence, as this is a sensitive issue concerning two communities.
Thereafter, representatives of the two relevant village development associations were given an opportunity to present their respective positions.
One party stated that the school had operated under the name ‘Government Tamil Mixed School’ since the time it was established and that its name was changed only after 2014. The other party stated that the school had operated under the name ‘Government Muslim Mixed School’ from its inception and that following the expulsion of Muslims in 1990, particularly from 2002 onwards during the period of peace, the name ‘Government Muslim Mixed School’ was again used.
Thereafter, the Zonal Director of Education, Divisional Secretary and Secretary of the Northern Provincial Ministry of Education provided explanations by presenting copies of the official documents available with them. The officials pointed out that those documents contained records showing the use of the name ‘Government Muslim Mixed School’.
Meanwhile, one party stated that they possessed a document showing that the school had operated under the name ‘Government Tamil Mixed School’ prior to 1990. The Governor granted a period of two weeks to submit the relevant documents properly.
The Secretary to the Governor of the Northern Province, Secretary of the Provincial Ministry of Education, Provincial Director of Education Department, the Divisional Secretary of Poonakary, Zonal Director of Education, the Private Secretary to the Governor, the Assistant Secretary to the Governor and the representatives of the two Village Development Societies of Nachchikuda East and Nachchikuda Central participated in this discussion.
