Development initiatives are set to be implemented with World Bank funding, focusing on the Gurunagar Fish Landing Site and Jaffna Fort.

A special meeting was held yesterday – on Wednesday, 24 June 2026, at the Governor’s Secretariat between a delegation led by the Hon. Governor of the Northern Province, N. Vethanayahan, and representatives of the World Bank. The discussion focused on the implementation and timeline of two major projects to be carried out in the Northern Province with financial assistance from the World Bank.

Under the World Bank-funded REVIVE (Regional Empowerment through Vibrant, Inclusive, and Viable Economies) project, which is being implemented in the Northern and Eastern Provinces, integrated development activities will initially be undertaken in the Northern Province, centered on two locations in Jaffna: the Gurunagar Fish Landing Site and the historically significant Jaffna Fort.

During the meeting, the World Bank team provided a detailed briefing to the Governor led delegation on how these two projects, which have already received World Bank approval, will be implemented at the field level and on the proposed project implementation schedule.

The Chief Secretary of the Northern Province and the Secretary to the Governor of the Northern Province also participated in this important discussion.
