Combating the severe drought caused by the “EL-Nino” climate phenomenon, Hon. N. Vethanayahan, Governor of Northern province, declared open a new tank constructed under “Kaithady Komatha Drinking Water Scheme – 2026” with the joint effort of people to address the needs for water for cattle. “Development of a village depends not on the government, but also on the initiative of its people”, this is the best example of that, the Governor pointed out.
This tank has been constructed near the Kaithady Veerakathi Pillaiyar Temple within Chavakachcheri Pradeshiya Sabha in Thenmaradchy.
With the funding of Kaithady diaspora people and support of Temple Administrative Board, the project has been implemented as per the designing of N. Sanjayan under the direct leadership of “Pasundesam Organization”.
The Governor praised the contribution of diaspora, noting that identifying the genuine need of the village rather than spending large sum for the decorative entrance arch is an excellent example for the social responsibility.
Since severe drought is expected following a heavy rain in a short period, he emphasized the necessity of preserving traditional water resources by storing rainwater preventing from mixing with sea. Measure will be taken to desilt pond near to this tank next year, he added.
The tank was officially opened following the lighting the oil lamp and cutting of ribbon. The event followed the tree planting and distribution of cattle feed to the farm owners.
The event was attended by the Chavakachcheri Divisional Secretary, Chairman of the Pradeshiya Sabha, Rural level Representatives and the people.
