A one-day workshop was conducted at the Nallur Pradeshiya Sabha Conference Hall on 19.12.2024 with the aim of identifying the gaps in gender equality and reconciliation, developing new projects, providing participants with knowledge on global best practices for women’s empowerment, women’s voice and women’s safety, identifying local barriers to implementing these techniques in the Northern Province, and developing action plans to improve services for women. The workshop was facilitated by Prof. (Mrs.) Shivani Shanmugathas, Director – Centre for Gender Reconciliation and Equality, University of Jaffna.
It is noteworthy that the workshop was held under the direction of the Assistant Secretary of the Ministry, Mrs. Rajamalligai Sivasuntharasarma, with 40 participants including Women Development Officers, Rural Development Officers, Social Service Officers and officials of the Ministry.
The objectives of the workshop are, at the end of the event, the participants would understand the national and local gender equality context, be prepared to address the gaps in their respective regions, gain knowledge of global best practices and understand their relevance to the local context, recognize the challenges that hinder the successful implementation of programs that promote women’s empowerment, participation and voice, make a personal commitment to implement one of the strategies discussed during the workshop, and outline the first step they plan to take in the coming weeks.
