The ‘Comfort Care Home’, a newly constructed palliative care home in Sarasalai, Chavakachcheri, opened today (24.10.2026). Speaking at the event, Northern Province Governor N. Vethanayahan noted that in today’s era, where joint families have transformed into nuclear families, caring for the elderly has become a major challenge. He commended the actions of donors who, despite living abroad, recognize the needs of their homeland and perform such noble deeds during these critical times as truly praiseworthy.
Addressing the event, Minister of Health and Mass Media, Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa, stated that providing comfort and relief to patients with untreatable end-stage illnesses and their families is a paramount duty. He highlighted that those who care for their homeland while living abroad have proven they are true Sri Lankans.
This home will operate not as an ordinary elders’ home, but as a specialized center for patients with a life expectancy of less than two months who require only palliative care without further treatments. Featuring 20 private rooms, essential services such as pain management, oxygen therapy, and full-time nursing care will be provided completely free of charge based on medical prescription. Minister Ramalingam Chandrasekar, founder of the home Dr. K. Thevakanthan, founder of the Sivapoomi Trust Dr. Aruthirumurugan, and senior officials from the health sector were present at the event.
