The Elder’s Week 2019 was celebrated on a theme of “The Journey to Age Equality” by Department of social service, Northern Province for seven days in the first week of October, 2019 at State Home for Elders in Kaithady with the participation of home inmates and the registered elder’s societies in all five districts in Northern Province. Several events like state elder’s home sports meet competitions among the elders, exhibition stalls by other departments and cultural shows were held in all seven days. The organizations that provide elders care and prominent elders were honoured for their talents and skills. This function creates awareness among the communities about the care for elders and their obligations.
Final day celebrations commenced with awareness walk and followed by cultural events. Governor Dr. Suren Ragavan was the Chief Guest and Secretary to the Governor S.Sathiyaseelan and Secretary to the Ministry of Women’s Affairs, Social Service, Cooperative and Industries R.Varatheeswaran were the Special Guests at the final day programme. Governor gave away “Muthusam” award to five prominent persons for their invaluable services to elders in each of the Northern districts and honoured prominent elderly social workers from all five districts in the Northern Province and also honoured on the final day evening programme.
