China’s Ambassador Hands over Rs. 12 million aid to Residents of Northern Province

China’s Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Qi Zhen Hong, handed over a cheque worth 12 million rupees today, Wednesday, November 20, 2024, on behalf of the Chinese government to Nagalingam Vethanayagam, the Hon. Governor of the Northern Province. The funds aim to uplift the livelihoods of the people living in the Northern Province. Ambassador Qi Zhen Hong met with Hon. Governor of Northern Province, Nagalingam Vethanayagam at the Governor’s Secretariat, Northern Province to present the cheque. The Hon. Governor expressed hope that the Chinese government will continue to provide assistance in the future too.

The ambassador expressed his happiness regarding the recent positive changes in the Northern Province. Hon. Governor Vethanayagam welcomed the ambassador and emphasized the need to focus on development activities and eliminate corruption in the region. He highlighted the challenges faced by farmers in exporting local products and noted that fish caught from the fishing are often exported directly rather than being processed into value-added seafood products. The ambassador hoped for continued support from the Chinese government and appreciated the hospitality of the people in the Northern Province. He shared that China has successfully lifted 800 million people out of poverty and is eager to share its experiences in this regard. The Governor’s Secretary, M. Nanthagobalan, also participated in the event.
